During the school year I teach 7th Grade Art, 8th Grade Art, Fundamentals of Art I, Fundamentals of Art II, Painting, and Studio. Below are the course descriptions which give an overview of learning.
7th Grade Art:
7th Grade Art provides the opportunity for students to develop an appreciation and understanding of the creation of art from a cultural and historical perspective, while learning to assess the quality of artwork through both aesthetic and critical responses. Using the elements and principles of art, students will learn skills and techniques while communicating in various visual materials including both two and three dimensions.
8th Grade Art:
8th Grade Art provides the opportunity for students to further develop an understanding of the influences in the creation of art and its impact on society. While increasing their mastery of various art materials, students will create individual and collaborative pieces and assess progress during the creation process.
Fundamentals of Art I: Grades 9,10,11,12
The Fundamentals of Art course is designed for the creative growth of the student through a variety of art experiences. Through experimentation and exploration of various art materials, the student will experience and learn skills that will develop a higher degree of appreciation for art. The course will teach various styles of art within the cultural, historical, and technological context in which it was created. Students will develop their critical and aesthetic vocabulary while discussing art as they master the knowledge of art as a language and develop communication skills through art.
Fundamentals of Art II: Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 *prerequisite of 70% or higher in Fundamentals of Art I
Fundamentals of Art II will Expand upon Fundamentals of Art I as students explore more traditional and contemporary materials while pursuing mastery of familiar ones. Students will look more closely at the role of art in culture as well as its reflection of culture, through analyzing various movements in art and critiquing collections of artwork within those movements. Special consideration will also be spent on the creative process from artistic investigation through exhibition. Students will use published and personal sources along with direct observation to create form, while source issues such as fair use, royalties, copyright infringements are discusses from a legal, ethical, economic, and artistic perspective.
Painting:
This course is designed to further the students' mastery of painting from direct observation and photographic sources. The investigation into both traditional and contemporary media, as well as various styles and techniques, are meant to sharpen the students' ability to paint well in various medium: acrylic, watercolor, gouache, and oil. Periodic peer critiques and collaborations are meant to refine students' work, along with a culminating end of course collaborative exhibit, either virtual or physical, that is designed and compiled by the students.
